WHAT IS HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY?
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is the administration of oxygen at high atmospheric pressure. It saturates the body with oxygen increasing the total available amount.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is administered by placing the patient in a special enclosed chamber that delivers pure oxygen at three times the normal atmospheric pressure. The chamber is depressurized before the person is removed. In some cases oxygen is delivered by mask making pressurization and depressurization unnecessary.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is most commonly used in cases of trauma, including burns, wounds, injuries from car accidents, carbon monoxide poisoning, acute cyanide poisoning, smoke inhalation, and death of tissues from radiation therapy. It is also used to treat skin grafts that are failing to take, gangrene, decompression sickness and some cases of blood loss and anemia.
When used after surgery, hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been known to greatly improve early healing. It has also been used to bring near-drowning victims out of comas.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy may not be appropriate for people with a history of emphysema, middle ear infections or an accumulation of air in the chest cavity.
