antioxidantI've often heard people talk about fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes and broccoli being an excellent source of antioxidant. However, I didn't really understand what exactly an antioxidant is. Since I'm the type of person who enjoys learning, I took a minute to find out what health experts are talking about when they mention the antioxidant. According to Wikipedia, an antioxidant is a molecule that can decelerate or stop the oxidation of other molecules. Oxidation can produce free radicals which initiate harmful chain reactions in our cells that age the body and cause diseases such as cancer. The antioxidant molecule stops that reaction by becoming oxidized itself. It is therefore a good idea to eat antioxidant rich foods that contain vitamins C, E and A as often as you can. Unfortunately, many of us lead busy lives so it's not always possible to eat right. If you simply don't have the time to cook meals using foods that you know are a good source of antioxidant, make sure you at least take a vitamin supplement with the appropriate recommended daily amounts of vitamins C, E and A.
